A young woman died and her sister and friend were injured in a car accident early Sunday morning, Feb. 17. The accident occurred along Illinois Route 3, near the intersection of Yellow Brick Road in Sauget, Illinois.

According to the Sauget Police Department, a young woman named Brooke Bahmler had traveled to Laclede's Landing along with her sister and a friend. When the trio left around 3 a.m. to return to their home in Ballwin, Mo., they got lost and ended up going the wrong way on the interstate.

Bahmler, 24 years old, was trying to get onto southbound Interstate 55 but instead took the exit for Illinois by accident. After she crossed over the Poplar Street Bridge into Sauget, she tried to right her mistake. Bahmler was attempting to make a U-turn at a stop sign off Illinois Route 3 on Yellow Brick Road when she was T-boned by an oncoming Jeep. Police say she turned directly into the Jeep's path.

Bahmler was rushed to Touchette Hospital in Centerfield, but she died along the way due to serious injuries sustained in the Illinois car crash.

Her sister, 22-year-old Abbie, was the front seat passenger when the accident happened and remained in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Louis University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries late Sunday evening. Their friend was recuperating at home after being treated for her injuries.

The driver of the Jeep, 34-year-old Sharon Frison of St. Louis, was also being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, Bahmler was the designated driver for the evening and had not been drinking. Alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash.

We extend our sincere condolences to Ms. Bahmler's family during their time of grief.
