Seven Injured when Bridge Overpass Buckles in Missouri Train Collision

The St. Louis accident attorneys of Alvin Wolff would like to alert you to a train accident that occurred in southern Missouri last month:

A highway bridge overpass in Scott County collapsed on May 25 after derailed train cars crashed into two of its support pillars. Seven people suffered minor injuries in the southeastern Missouri crash.

A Union Pacific train was attempting to navigate a railroad intersection around 2:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning when it hit the side of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, according to the Scott County sheriff's office.

The train collision derailed about two-dozen of the train cars, sending several crashing into the Highway M overpass nearby. Local news reports say that two 40-foot sections of the 15-year-old bridge buckled under the pressure of the Missouri accident.

Two cars were driving on the bridge just as a portion of it collapsed. Both vehicles managed to land on all four tires.

Five occupants from the vehicles were taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau for treatment of their injuries. The conductor and one of the engineers on the Union Pacific train were also being treated. The sheriff's department said that none of the injuries were serious.

Police had to shut down an eight-mile portion of the highway leading toward the small town of Chaffee, about 120 miles southeast of St. Louis.

The National Transportation Safety Board will continue to investigate the cause of the crash, the third railroad accident to occur in the southeastern Missouri this year. Meanwhile, it is estimated that repair of the bridge overpass will cost about $3 million.

We wish those injured in this accident a fast and full recovery.
