May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Statistics say motorcycle fatalities made up 16 percent of all vehicle fatalities last year, though motorcycles account for just 3 percent of total vehicle registrations. About 80 percent of motorcycle crashes result in injury or death, compared to 20 percent for car crashes. Drivers must be aware of their surroundings and see everything there is to be seen. This includes bicycles and motorcycles.

With the nice weather, more folks are out for pleasure rides. This means certain areas, particularly Highway 94 in St. Charles County, are more dangerous for motorcyclists and bicyclists because the roads are windier, the people are a little more intoxicated from the wineries, and people just aren't paying attention.
Be careful. Be safe.
