Left Turn Means Yield

Posted by Alvin Wolff | Dec 13, 2013 | 0 Comments

Today in the paper involved the story of a fatal St. Louis County Car Accident with a fatality.   One person made a left turn into the path of another and someone was killed.  The story was not clear as to who died.  No one can be in that much of a hurry that they cannot wait until it is clear to make a left turn.  The person in the oncoming lane always has the right of way in the absence of an arrow.  Many of us cannot estimate speed either.  If a car is 100 feet away and is traveling 60 miles an hour you have 1 and 1/2 seconds to make your turn.  Wait 10 seconds until it the area is safe.  The other scenario that I see is when someone is coming out of a shopping center to make a left turn and there is congestion to the driver's left.  It is very common for somebody to wave the person out into traffic and then the person making the left turn gets hit by someone in the thru lane who is unaware of what is going on until it is too late.  Wait 30 seconds until the area is safe.

Common sense goes a long way in avoiding fatal and near fatal car wrecks.
