One Teen Dies, Second Injured in Single-Vehicle Accident in Belleville

A teenage boy died on Saturday, January 26, in a single-car auto accident near the border of St. Louis, Missouri, and Belleville, Illinois.

The accident occurred along the 2100 block of State Street Road just outside of Belleville. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene of a Missouri car accident there around 2:15 a.m. Saturday.

According to the sheriff department's preliminary investigation into the crash, the 18-year-old driver of a maroon 2002 Oldsmobile was traveling southbound on Park Road when the accident happened.

As he attempted to turn left onto State Street Road, he apparently lost control of the vehicle. The car flipped over, ejecting both the driver and passenger. It appears that neither of the vehicle's occupants was wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The driver, Stephen E. Zehner of Belleville, was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was a senior at Belleville West High School. Fellow classmates held a vigil in his honor Saturday evening, remembering the bright young man for his welcoming smile.

His passenger, 15-year-old Megan E. Webb of Belleville, was rushed to St. Louis Children's Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. She also attends Belleville West High School.

Police are still trying to determine what caused Zehner to lose control of the car. Anyone with information regarding the Missouri car accident is asked to call the St. Clair County Sheriff's investigators at 618-825-5712.

The Missouri wrongful death attorneys of Alvin Wolff, Jr., and Associates express their deepest sympathies to the Zehner family.
